If you want to ensure that your vehicle runs smoothly and safely on the roads of Winter Haven and Bartow, it is crucial that you keep up with routine tire maintenance. Having your tires rotated and ensuring that they are inflated to the proper tire pressure are just a few of the many important steps you can take to prolong the life of your tires. Learn all about proper tire care with the automotive experts at Buick Lakeland below.

How to Get the Most Out of Your Tires

As mentioned above, the best way to get the most out of your tires is to care for them properly. The tips provided below are just a few of the many ways to keep your tires performing at their best.

Tire Rotation

Regular tire rotations are typically performed every 5,000 to 7,000 miles. This task is necessary because the drivetrain of your vehicle causes your tires to wear down at different speeds. Rotating them on a regular basis helps them to wear more evenly so you do not have to replace the set as frequently.

Tire Balancing and Wheel Alignment

While these terms are sometimes used interchangeably, they actually describe two different services.

  • Tire Balancing: During the process of tire balancing, small weights are attached to the tire, and this helps to reduce vibration. If you notice that your vehicle is vibrating as you drive around Brandon, it could be a sign that your tires need to be balanced once again.
  • Wheel Alignment: Each wheel of your vehicle has specific alignment settings. Over time, as you encounter tough terrain in Lakeland, your wheels can fall out of that optimal position. If this is the case, you may notice that your vehicle drifts or pulls to one side.

Tire Pressure and Tread Depth

To prolong the life of your tires and achieve optimal fuel economy, your tires should always be inflated properly. Many newer vehicles have a tire pressure monitoring system, but you can also check your tire pressure manually.

To do so:

  • Remove the valve cap on your tire.
  • Put the tire pressure gauge over the valve stem and press firmly. You do not want to hear the sound of escaping air.
  • Check the gauge to see the tire pressure level.
  • If you need to add air, push the air hose firmly into the valve of the tire. Keep checking the pressure every few seconds until it reaches the correct level.
  • Put the valve cap back in place.

Ensuring the proper tread depth is also important. The tread of your tires helps your vehicle maintain traction when road conditions are slick or less than ideal. When your tread depth is lower than 2/32” it is time to replace your tires. To check your tread depth, all you need is a penny. Place the penny into the tire grooves, and if you can see above the top of Lincoln’s head, your tread depth is too low.
